Where We Came From:
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has a long and exciting history. The beginnings of our denomination go back to the American frontier (Missouri, Kentucky, Pennsylvania) of the early 1800's. Our early founders (Barton W. Stone, Thomas Campbell, and his son Alexander Campbell) were reacting to the limitations of the churches of the time when they began the preaching and teaching that would eventually lead to our current church. What Disciples Believe:
Like most Christians, Disciples affirm:
Beliefs and practices usually associated with Disciples include:
Traditions at INCC:
The power of our beliefs come from their simplicity. Our services are centered around communion, which we serve every week. We offer communion to anyone who wants it without question. This tradition goes back to the Disciple's beginnings in frontier America. We baptize new members by immersion. However we accept anyone as a member who has been baptized by any method. Although our denomination provides guidance and leadership each Disciple's church is self-governed. Here at INCC we have a group of Elders and Deacons who provide spiritual guidance and assist our ministers in worship. Business and management decisions are made by our Board. All are elected by the church members. Our budgets are open and approved by the members. Major decisions are voted on by the members. Our education programs emphasize reading and discussing the Bible. We believe that the Bible is the fundamental guide by which we all should live. We are not afraid to dive deep into it and Christian history to learn what God wants for us and how to live our daily lives. We believe that it is possible for Christians to have different beliefs. The role of the church is not to indoctrinate or judge others but to assist people in spiritual growth. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we believe that God sent his son Jesus Christ to earth to die for our sins and that belief in Christ is the key to salvation.
If you are looking for a church home we would love for you to give us a try. Our church is made up of people who are life-long Disciples as well as people who have just discovered God's love. And if you ultimately decide that INCC is not the Christian home for you we will try to help you find the place that is right for you.
